Press Brake Sheet Metal Forming Process

Everyone at Stanron Steel Specialties is proud of the high quality products we have produced during our 40+ years in business. Sheet metal forming or bending plays a critical role in the fabrication of parts for many different applications. The process involves the exertion of a tremendous amount of force onto a piece of sheet metal, which causes it to conform to a desired shape. We specialize in both standard and complex shapes.

In most cases, when sheet metal is stretched, it does not increase the thickness of the piece. In addition to changing the shape of the sheet in the forming process, bending can also be utilized to give additional strength and stiffness to metal. This process involves sheet metal being put in position over a die block, which presses the piece into a desired shape. The pressure put on the sheet metal in order to bend it has to be strong enough to overcome both its tensile and compressive stresses. In most cases, sheet metal tends to spring back to its original shape after bending, so fabrication professionals will usually over bend pieces, so when retraction occurs, the metal will still retain its intended shape.
There are three types of bending methods that can be performed on a press brake.

  • Air Bending
  • Bottoming
  • Coining

Regardless of the type of sheet metal bending your project requires, the experts at Stanron Steel Specialties can be your one stop solution partner.
